Flying out for my first Caribbean season in a few weeks and my bag is already too heavy. Med season I over-packed massively and wore about a third of it. What actually gets used out there that isn't obvious?

Long-sleeve sun shirts. Two more than you think. The sun out there is not Med sun and you will be in the water or on a tender for hours. Reef-safe sunscreen in bulk, because it's twice the price on the islands. Same for contact lens solution, any medication you take, and decent razors. A small dehumidifier bag for your locker. Everything moulds. And leave the going-out clothes at home. You will wear the same three t-shirts for five months.

Bring a proper water bottle and an actual towel that dries, not a hotel one. Also: spare phone charging cables. Salt air destroys them and the shop in the marina charges $30 for one.

Anything you take daily — bring the whole season's worth. Pharmacies vary enormously island to island and "we can order it" means three weeks.

Bug spray with proper DEET. Sandflies in some anchorages are genuinely miserable and the supermarket stuff does nothing.
