Welcome to the crew mess. This forum is for advice, experience and the conversations that don't fit anywhere else β€” how to break in, which ticket to take next, what a season in the Med is actually like. YachtMuster keeps separate places for separate jobs, and most of what follows is simply about putting a post in the right one. ━━━ 1. WHERE THINGS BELONG ━━━ THE FORUM IS NOT A JOB BOARD. Vacancies, "crew available", "looking for a boat", day rates and "DM me your CV" all belong elsewhere. Posts that read like a job ad are held automatically for a moderator, and get moved or removed. πŸ”Ž A permanent or seasonal position β†’ the Job Board. Free to post, free to apply, unlimited. βš“ A day or two of work in port β†’ the Daywork board. Sixty seconds to post. πŸ›’ Selling kit, a bike, a tender, a flat share β†’ the Marketplace. ⭐ Rating a vessel or management company β†’ Reviews (see section 3). πŸ’¬ Contacting one person privately β†’ Messages, not a public thread. 🐞 Something broken, or an idea β†’ the Feedback button, bottom-right of every page. Posting in the right place isn't bureaucracy. It's what makes any of this findable six months from now. ━━━ 2. POST LIKE A CREW MEMBER, NOT A BILLBOARD ━━━ β€’ Give threads a title that says what's inside. "Help" and "Question" tell nobody anything. β€’ Search before you post β€” most first-season questions already have a good answer. β€’ One thread per topic. Don't repost the same question across departments. β€’ No affiliate links, referral codes, course-provider spam or self-promotion. Advertising is sold as advertising: use the Contact page. β€’ Don't scrape the forum or harvest members' details. That is a straight ban. ━━━ 3. REVIEWS HAVE THEIR OWN RULES ━━━ Vessel and management-company reviews are structured and moderated: fixed rating categories, an optional short comment, and every review held until a moderator approves it. β€’ Review only what you have genuinely experienced yourself. No second-hand stories. β€’ The subject of a review has a RIGHT OF REPLY, and can dispute a review β€” which sends it back to moderation. β€’ You may post anonymously. Public readers see "Verified crew member"; moderators always see who wrote it. Anonymity protects you from an employer, not from us. β€’ Free-text "name and shame" threads in the forum are not permitted. Take it to Reviews, where the other side can answer. β€’ Nothing defamatory, and nothing you couldn't stand behind if asked. Describe what happened, not what you assume about someone's character. Praise needs no permission β€” Shout-Outs exists for exactly that. ━━━ 4. BE DECENT ━━━ β€’ No harassment, bullying, racism, sexism or pile-ons. β€’ NO DOXXING. Don't post anyone's phone number, address, passport, visa, salary or private messages β€” including your own crew's. β€’ Disagree with the argument, not the person. β€’ What's said in the Crew Mess is a conversation between adults. Screenshotting threads to embarrass someone elsewhere is a bannable offence. β€’ Bad safety advice gets people hurt. If you're not sure, say you're not sure. ━━━ 5. ACCOUNTS, REPUTATION AND MODERATION ━━━ β€’ VERIFY YOUR EMAIL TO POST. It's the only thing standing between this forum and the bots. β€’ One account per person. No sock puppets to back up your own argument. β€’ Some abilities unlock as you earn reputation from useful contributions. β€’ Moderators may edit, move, lock, remove or redirect any post, and suspend any account, without notice. β€’ Use REPORT rather than replying to a rule-breaker. Arguing with them just spreads it. β€’ Employer accounts are checked by hand before they can post a vacancy or see any crew document. If someone claiming to be a recruiter approaches you oddly, report it. ━━━ 6. MONEY, AND THE THINGS THAT GET CREW SCAMMED ━━━ Nobody legitimate charges a fee to GIVE you a job. β€’ Never pay to be placed, shortlisted or "registered" by someone you met here. β€’ Be very suspicious of anyone who wants the conversation moved off-platform immediately, wants your documents before an interview, or needs a deposit for a visa, a course or a flight. β€’ YachtMuster is a noticeboard. We don't vet vessels, we don't verify that a listing is real, we are not a party to anything you agree with another member, and we cannot recover your money. Do your own checks before you sign anything or send anyone a cent. β€’ Marketplace listings are PUBLIC TO THE WHOLE INTERNET, including people without an account, and may be indexed by search engines. Only post what you're happy for the world to see. ━━━ 7. YOUR CONTENT ━━━ You keep ownership of what you post, and you are responsible for it. By posting you allow us to host and display it here. Opinions in this forum are those of individual members and NOT those of YachtMuster. ━━━ The Terms of service and Privacy policy are the binding versions β€” this thread is the plain-English summary. Fair winds, and good luck out there. β€” The YachtMuster team
