Chief stew runs the interior as a department: rota and hours of rest, provisioning and stock, budgets, standards, training juniors, and being the person the captain asks when a charter changes at short notice.
It is the clearest management route in yachting, and on larger boats it leads to purser, where the job becomes accounts, ISPS paperwork, travel and crew administration.
